{"id":254,"date":"2016-10-04T13:11:54","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T17:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.barbarabald.com\/?p=254"},"modified":"2016-10-04T13:11:54","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T17:41:54","slug":"learning-to-kiss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.barbarabald.com\/?p=254","title":{"rendered":"Learning To Kiss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Big Aunt Grace,<br \/>\n(that\u2019s what we called her)<br \/>\nwas huge, gorilla-huge,<br \/>\nand with her sticky sweet perfume<br \/>\nfilling the room, she would kiss everyone<br \/>\nwith the squeeze of an African python,<br \/>\ncoiled tightly around the body<br \/>\ntill all breath was gone,<br \/>\nand we\u2019d squirm with fear<br \/>\nto be released.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa Scott, a doctor and pharmacist,<br \/>\nwas always ready to kiss us goodbye,<br \/>\nalways reaching to smother us<br \/>\nin his bushy full beard<br \/>\nand prickly mustache that reeked<br \/>\nof alcohol, formaldehyde and ether.<\/p>\n<p>Surely we still feel that vice-grip<br \/>\non the cheek that left a welt,<br \/>\nthe <em>aren\u2019t-you-just-the-cutest-little-thing<\/em><br \/>\npinch-kiss that Uncle Harold planted on us<br \/>\neach time he saw us\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the squeezing and shaking of tender flesh<br \/>\nbetween forefinger and thumb<br \/>\nthat sent us racing for the closet<br \/>\nbefore he entered the room.<\/p>\n<p>And what about those handsome Aussies<br \/>\nin their Navy blue uniforms, who visited us<br \/>\nduring the war?
